Best Time to Post on Instagram in India: How to Find Yours
Search "best time to post on Instagram" and you'll find confident answers: Wednesday at 11 am, weekdays at 3 pm, weekends at 9 am. Most come from studies of accounts around the world, and they don't agree with each other. One large 2025 analysis by Buffer pointed to weekday afternoons around 3 pm and 6 pm; another 2025 guide put the best window at 10 am to 2 pm. None of them was about India.
The honest answer is that the best time to post depends on when your followers are on their phones. A Mumbai café, a Jaipur jewellery shop and a Bengaluru software founder have very different audiences, and so do their best times. Here's how to find yours in two weeks.
Start with three IST slots
If you're starting from nothing, these three slots follow the shape of most working days in India. Treat them as a starting point to test, not a rule:
- Morning, 8 to 10 am: before work and college, and on the commute.
- Lunch, 1 to 2 pm: a short break that a lot of people spend scrolling.
- Evening, 7 to 10 pm: after work and dinner, when people have the most time on their phones.
Weekends shift later: people wake up later and are out in the afternoon. Festivals shift everything: on Diwali, most of your customers are with family, not on Instagram.
Find when your followers are online
Instagram shows this for free, if you have a professional (Business or Creator) account:
- Open your profile and tap Professional dashboard.
- Under your account insights, open Total followers.
- Scroll to Most active times and switch between Hours and Days.
The menu names change between app versions, so look for "followers" and "active times" if yours looks different. Instagram only shows follower details once you have enough followers (about 100), so a new account may not see it yet.
Look for the hours that are high on most days, not one spike. Post a little before that peak, so your post is fresh when your followers open the app.
Check where your followers live
If many of your followers are outside India, IST slots won't suit them. A brand with customers in the Gulf, the UK or the US has to choose: post for the biggest group, or split posts between time zones.
Instagram's insights show your followers' top countries and cities. PostStage shows them too, in the Instagram audience insights, next to your scheduled posts.
Run a two-week test
Knowing when people are online isn't the same as knowing when your posts do best. A short test settles it:
- Pick three slots from above, or from your Most active times.
- Post similar things in each slot for two weeks, at least four or five posts per slot. If you post Reels in one slot and photos in another, you're testing the format, not the time.
- Compare how many people saw each post, not just likes (reach in Instagram's insights, views in PostStage). Likes depend on the post; reach shows whether the timing put it in front of people.
- Keep the winner and test it against one new slot the next month. Audiences change: a new season, exams, the cricket season or a festival can move them.
Let the schedule do the work
The hardest part of posting at the best time is being free at that time: 8 am is when you're opening the shop, 8 pm is when you're closing it. Write your posts when you have time, and schedule them for the slot that works.
PostStage schedules Instagram posts, Reels, carousels and Stories to go out at the exact minute you choose, in IST or in each account's own timezone. Once an account has some history, the composer suggests a time based on that account's own past engagement, on every plan. From the Starter plan, every post shows its views, likes, comments, shares and saves, so your two-week test is a glance at your post list rather than a spreadsheet.
