How to Auto-DM Instagram Commenters (No ManyChat)

You've seen the post. A carousel ends with "Comment GUIDE and I'll send it to you", the comments fill up with the word GUIDE, and each of those people gets a DM with the link a few seconds later.

It works for a simple reason. A comment is the easiest thing to ask for, Instagram reads comments as interest in the post, and a DM puts your link where people will actually tap it, since links in captions don't work. Coaches use it for freebies, D2C brands for product links, and creators for the preset or the recipe everyone asks about.

The usual way to set it up is ManyChat, which means a second subscription next to your scheduler. This guide shows how comment-to-DM works, the limits Meta puts on it, and how to run it from the same place you schedule the post.

How comment-to-DM works on Instagram

Instagram has an official way for a business to answer a comment privately, called a private reply. When someone comments on your post, your account can send that person one DM in response to that comment. They don't need to follow you, and they don't need to have messaged you before.

A comment-to-DM tool watches your post's comments through Meta's official API. When a comment matches your keyword, it sends the private reply with your message and link. Nothing about this needs a password, a browser extension or a bot clicking around on your account.

The rules Meta sets (every tool has to follow them)

These come from Meta, not from any one tool, so they apply whether you use ManyChat, PostStage or anything else:

  • Professional accounts only. Your Instagram account has to be a Business or Creator account.
  • One private reply per comment, within 7 days. In Meta's words, "only one message can be sent to the commenter", and it "must be sent within 7 days" of the comment. Comments on last month's post can't be answered this way.
  • Follow-ups only after they reply. Meta allows more messages only "if the recipient responds", and within 24 hours of that response. That's why a DM button works: tapping it counts as their reply and opens the conversation.
  • An hourly limit. Meta caps how many private replies an account can send in an hour. PostStage stays well inside it, at up to about 190 DMs an hour per account. If a post takes off, nothing breaks: the extra DMs wait their turn and go out shortly after.
  • Some people can't be messaged. If someone has turned off messages from businesses, Instagram won't deliver the DM, and no tool can get around that.
  • No spam. Meta's policies forbid messages that "confuse, deceive, defraud, mislead, spam or surprise anyone", and Instagram's guidelines warn against "repeatedly contacting people for commercial purposes without their consent". A DM someone asked for by commenting is fine. Blasting people who didn't ask is not.

What you need before you start

  1. An Instagram Business or Creator account.
  2. A PostStage account on the Pro plan (₹999 a month, or ₹799 a month billed yearly; $12 or $9 outside India). Comment-to-DM is included; there's no add-on.
  3. The thing you're sending: a link to the guide, the product page, the booking form.

New to PostStage? The 14-day Pro trial needs no card and includes Comment-to-DM.

Set it up in PostStage, step by step

1. Open the post. In the Instagram composer, or in Cross-Post if the post also goes to other networks, open the Auto-DM on comment card. You can set it up while you schedule the post, or later on a post that's already live: open the post's page in PostStage and add it there. It works on feed posts, carousels and Reels. Stories don't take comments, so they're not included.

2. Choose your keywords. Type up to 10, such as GUIDE, LINK or PRICE. Matching is by whole word, in any case: "Guide please!" counts, "guidebook" doesn't. Keywords in Hindi and emoji work too. If you want every comment to get the DM, switch on Any comment instead.

3. Write the DM. This is the message under DM they get, up to 1,000 characters. Put {name} where you want the person's name, and paste your link as normal:

Hey {name}! Here's the festive lookbook you asked for: https://yourstore.in/lookbook

4. Reply under the comment (optional). Switch on Also reply publicly under the comment and PostStage answers each matching comment with something like "Check your DMs 📩". Add up to 5 wordings and they take turns, so a post with hundreds of comments doesn't look like a bot wrote every reply. The public reply also shows everyone scrolling the comments that the offer is real.

5. Leave "Ask them to follow first" off, in most cases. PostStage has an optional step (Instagram only) that sends the link only to people who follow you: the first DM carries a Send me the link button, and anyone who doesn't follow yet is asked to follow and tap again. Think twice before using it. Meta's spam policy lists "like/share-gating: requiring users to engage (...) to gain access to specific, exclusive content" among the things it does not allow, and making a link conditional on a follow is close to that. A DM that simply delivers what people asked for is the safer choice, and it reaches everyone who commented.

6. Turn it on. Press Turn on auto-DM. From now on, each person gets one DM per post, however many times they comment. Replies to other comments don't trigger it, and neither do your own comments.

7. Watch it work. The post's page in PostStage lists who got the DM, who is waiting to tap the button, and anyone who couldn't be messaged, with the reason in plain words, such as "This person doesn't accept messages from businesses". You can pause the rule or change the message at any time.

How to write a post that gets the comments

The automation is the easy part. The comments come from the post.

  • Say the keyword early. Put "Comment GUIDE" in the first line of the caption and on the last slide or the last seconds of the Reel. Many people never tap "more".
  • Pick a real word. A short, plain word people would type anyway (GUIDE, LINK, MENU, SIZE) beats a made-up code, and people type it right the first time.
  • Say what they'll get. "Comment LIST for my 12-item packing list" gets more comments than "Comment LIST for something special".
  • Deliver what you promised. The DM should hold the thing itself, not a second hoop such as "follow me first".
  • Use it where a DM really helps. A link people asked for is welcome. Using it to push something they didn't ask for is spam, and people can report it.

ManyChat or a built-in comment-to-DM?

ManyChat is a full chat-marketing platform, and it does much more than this: multi-step conversation flows, broadcasts, email and phone capture, growth tools, and channels beyond Instagram. If you're building chatbot funnels, ManyChat is the right tool and PostStage doesn't try to replace it.

Most people who sign up for ManyChat only want one thing: comment a keyword, get a link. For that, a second subscription is a lot of overhead, and ManyChat's price grows with your audience. Since March 2026, its plans are priced by "Active Contacts", the people your account messages in a month:

  • Free: up to 25 Active Contacts a month and 4 live automations, with a "Powered by Manychat" message the first time you message someone.
  • Essential: $14 a month billed yearly, up to 250 Active Contacts.
  • Pro: $29 a month billed yearly ($39 monthly), up to 2,500 Active Contacts, then a few cents for each extra contact.

A single Reel that takes off can bring in more than 25 commenters in its first hour, so the Free plan runs out fast. And every plan is billed in dollars, on top of whatever you pay to schedule the post.

PostStage keeps it in the post itself. You write the post, schedule it to Instagram (and up to 15 other networks), and set the keyword in the same composer. Pro includes Comment-to-DM along with 30 accounts, 10 team seats and approvals, for ₹999 a month, with no count of contacts.

Frequently asked questions

Is comment-to-DM allowed by Instagram? Yes, when it goes through Meta's official messaging API, as PostStage's does. Private replies to comments are a feature Meta built for businesses. The limits above (one reply per comment, within 7 days, more only after they reply, an hourly cap) are how Meta keeps it from turning into spam.

Do people need to follow me to get the DM? No, and it's best not to require it. Anyone who comments gets the DM. PostStage has an optional follow-first step, but Meta's spam policy lists engagement-gating among the things it doesn't allow, so we suggest leaving it off.

Does it work on Reels? Yes, on Reels, feed posts and carousels. Not on Stories, which don't have comments.

Can I add it to a post that's already live? Yes, to a post you published through PostStage: open its page in PostStage and add the rule there. Remember Meta's 7-day window: comments older than 7 days can't get a private reply.

What if someone comments the keyword five times? They get one DM. PostStage sends one per person per post.

Does it work on Facebook too? Yes, on Facebook Page posts, set up the same way. The follow step is Instagram only.

Which plan do I need? Pro or Enterprise. You can try it free for 14 days on the Pro trial, which needs no card.
