How to Schedule Instagram Stories (and What You Can't)
Stories are where a lot of daily Instagram happens: behind the scenes, quick offers, "new post is up", reminders before a launch. They're also the hardest thing to keep up with, because they disappear after 24 hours and need posting every day.
You can schedule them. Not every kind, though. Here's what Instagram allows, what still needs your phone, and how to plan a week of Stories in one sitting.
What you can schedule
Instagram lets outside tools publish Stories through its official API, with these limits:
- One photo or one video per Story.
- Videos from 3 to 60 seconds, up to 100 MB.
- Vertical works best: 9:16 fills the screen.
Meta's own Meta Business Suite app can also schedule Stories ("tap Schedule for later"), for Facebook and Instagram.
What you can't schedule
Instagram's API says it plainly: "Publishing stickers (i.e., link, poll, location) is not supported." So a scheduled Story can't carry:
- Link stickers
- Polls, questions or quizzes
- Location stickers
- Collaborators
PostStage doesn't add music to Stories either; if a Story needs a sound from Instagram's library, add it in the app.
The workaround for text and graphics: put them in the image or video before you upload it. Design the Story in Canva or your video editor, with your text, arrows, logo and even a drawn "link in bio" pointer, and export it as a photo or video. It's only interactive stickers that have to be added in the app.
For link stickers and polls: post those Stories by hand in the Instagram app, and schedule the rest. A good split is to schedule the everyday Stories and keep a few interactive ones for the moments you're on your phone anyway.
How to schedule a Story in PostStage
1. Open the Instagram composer (or the Facebook one, for Facebook Stories) and switch from Feed post to Story.
2. Add one photo or one video.
- Photos: JPG or PNG, up to 4 MB for Instagram (10 MB for Facebook).
- Videos: MP4 or MOV, 3 to 60 seconds, up to 100 MB.
- PostStage refuses anything taller than 9:16 or wider than 1.91:1, so it won't publish a Story Instagram would crop badly.
3. Pick the date and time, and schedule. Stories don't take captions, hashtags or a first comment, so there's nothing else to fill in. The Story goes up at the exact second you set and disappears 24 hours later, like any Story.
Single Stories work on every plan, Free included.
Plan a week of Stories at once: Story Series
Posting Stories one at a time is where scheduling stops saving time. Story Series (Starter and above) schedules a whole run in one go:
- Upload up to 10 clips (photos or videos).
- Pick the accounts: several Instagram accounts and Facebook Pages at once. Each clip becomes its own Story on each account, up to 100 Stories in total.
- Set First Story goes out at and Minutes between Stories (5 by default), so they arrive as a sequence instead of all at once.
- Press Schedule. Each Story counts toward the monthly post limit.
Use it for a launch countdown, a "day in the life" sequence, or the same promo across a brand's Instagram and Facebook.

Frequently asked questions
Can you schedule Instagram Stories? Yes: photos and videos up to 60 seconds, through a scheduling tool or Meta Business Suite. Stickers such as links and polls have to be added in the app.
Can I schedule a Story with a link? Not with a link sticker; Instagram doesn't let outside tools add one. Post link Stories by hand, or put "link in bio" in the image itself.
How long can a scheduled Story video be? 3 to 60 seconds through Instagram's API.
Can I schedule Stories for a Creator account? In PostStage, yes: Stories auto-publish for Business and Creator accounts alike. Some other tools post Creator Stories only as a reminder.
Can I schedule several Stories in a row? Yes. PostStage's Story Series schedules up to 10 clips across your accounts, a few minutes apart.
