Can Hootsuite Post to Instagram? What Works and What Doesn't

The short answer

Yes. Hootsuite can schedule and publish Instagram posts, carousels, Reels and Stories. But how much it can do depends on your account:

  • Instagram Business account, linked to a Facebook Page: Hootsuite publishes most posts for you automatically.
  • Instagram Creator account: Hootsuite can't publish for you. It sends a reminder to your phone, and you finish every post in the Instagram app.
  • Personal account: Hootsuite can't connect it at all.

Everything below comes from Hootsuite's own help centre, checked in October 2026.

Which Instagram accounts work with Hootsuite

Hootsuite connects Business and Creator accounts only. As its help centre puts it, "Meta no longer allows third party tools like Hootsuite to integrate and manage Instagram Personal profiles."

Two more conditions matter:

  • Only Business accounts can auto-publish. Hootsuite says its "Publish directly" option "is only available for Instagram Business profiles". Creator accounts have to use the phone-reminder route for all posts and Stories.
  • You need a Facebook Page. "To access direct publishing to Instagram, your Business profile must be connected to a Facebook Page", and you connect Instagram to Hootsuite by logging in with Facebook.

If you're a creator who switched to a Creator account for the music library or the creator tools, this is the biggest catch. You'd have to switch to Business, and link a Facebook Page, before Hootsuite can post for you.

What Hootsuite can publish automatically

For a Business account linked to a Facebook Page:

FormatAuto-publish?Notes
Single photoYes
CarouselYesUp to 10 items
ReelYesA single video publishes as a Reel. 3 seconds to 15 minutes
Video postYes3 to 60 seconds
Story, one photo or videoYes
Story, more than one photo or videoNoPhone reminder
Anything on a Creator accountNoPhone reminder

What doesn't work, or only works from your phone

Stickers, link stickers and trending audio. Hootsuite says "you can't add link stickers, stickers, or search for trending audio for your Instagram post within Hootsuite." Its video editor can add music, but not Instagram's trending sounds. (This is a limit of Instagram's API for every outside tool, not just Hootsuite.)

First comments, tags and collaborators on phone-reminder posts. When a post goes the phone-reminder route, Hootsuite says you lose the first comment, location and product tags, and invites to collaborators. So Creator accounts get none of these from Hootsuite.

A new cover for videos inside a carousel. You can choose the thumbnail for a video post, but not for videos inside a carousel. And if you post the same video to Facebook and Instagram, both use the same cover.

Tagging people in carousel videos. Not supported.

Product tags on Stories, or from the mobile app. Product tags work on feed posts (up to 5 per photo or video, 20 per post), but not on Stories, and not from Hootsuite's phone app.

A grid planner. Hootsuite has no built-in Instagram grid preview. There's a free "Instagram Grid" app in its app directory, built by a third party.

Analytics for collab posts. Hootsuite's Instagram analytics need a Business account linked to a Facebook Page, and don't include posts you collaborated on.

What does work well

On a Business account, Hootsuite does the core job properly:

  • Auto-publishing posts, carousels, Reels and single Stories
  • A scheduled first comment (on posts it publishes directly)
  • Up to 3 collaborators, up to 20 people tagged, one location, and product tags on feed posts
  • Choosing a Reel's cover
  • Instagram comments, messages and mentions in its inbox
  • Recommended times to post, on every plan

Limits worth knowing

  • 25 posts a day. Hootsuite says you can "directly publish up to 25 posts or reels in any rolling 24-hour period" per account.
  • Captions up to 2,200 characters.
  • Hashtags. Hootsuite's help centre still describes "the maximum of 30 hashtags" as shared between caption and first comment. Instagram itself has allowed only 5 per post or Reel since December 2025, so keep to five.
  • Last-minute edits. Changes need to be made at least 6 minutes before a post goes out, 15 minutes for videos, or 30 if the video needs processing.

What it costs for Instagram

Hootsuite has no Instagram-only plan. The cheapest plan, Standard, is $99 per user a month billed yearly and covers 10 social accounts. Hootsuite shows lower rupee prices to visitors in India.

If you're on a Creator account, or don't want a Facebook Page

Some schedulers now connect through Instagram's own login rather than Facebook's, which removes both of Hootsuite's conditions.

PostStage is one of them. You sign in with Instagram itself, no Facebook Page is needed, and Business and Creator accounts both auto-publish:

  • Feed posts, carousels of up to 10, Reels with a cover frame you pick, and Stories
  • A first comment on every plan, including Free
  • Collab posts with up to 3 co-authors
  • Posts that go out at the exact second you schedule them

Some things are the same everywhere, because they're limits of Instagram's API: no tool can add stickers, link stickers or trending audio for you. And PostStage doesn't do location or product tags.

PostStage's Free plan covers one Instagram account and 15 posts a month. Starter is ₹499 a month (₹399 billed yearly), or $6 outside India, for 15 accounts. See the full PostStage vs Hootsuite comparison →
